west greenland sail and Kayak expedition

sail Greenland’s Wild West Coast.

Join SSV for a week of sailing, kayaking and hiking through the ice and fjords of West Greenland. Using our 16-passenger schooner, Elsie, we journey north from Ilulissat through Disko Bay to Disko Island and Uummannaq Fjord. Each day offers opportunities to paddle among icebergs, trek through picturesque valleys, visit remote communities and experience the sight of whales under the midnight sun. This trip is suitable for paddlers, hikers and those seeking an in depth experience of the west coast of Greenland with a small group of likeminded travellers.

discover disko bay: Icebergs, whales and the Midnight Sun

Your expedition begins in Rekayvik where you will be briefed by your expedition leader in preparation for your flight across the Greenland icecap to Ilulissat. There will be time to explore Ilulissat before boarding Elsi to set sail for Disko Island in Disko Bay. Disko Island is the largest island along the coast of Greenland and is unique for its lush vegetation and volcanic landscape, providing a stark contrast to the surrounding seas glistening with towering icebergs. We explore stunning black beaches, hidden coves with waterfalls and discover the diverse vegetation as we trek, cruise or paddle the coast of Disko Island.

We may have the opportunity to explore both the eastern and western expanse of Disko Island including areas with Ramsar wetlands designated to be of international significance as breeding sites for the white-fronted goose and the king eider. Whether sailing, paddling or hiking, enjoy spectacular views and the unique flora and fauna of Greenland.

Uummannaq Fjord: Islands to icecaps

Uummannaq Fjord is renowned for dramatic mountains, unique islands, remote communities and extensive fields of ice. We stop in the township of Uummannaq, a small but thriving community at the foot of a heart-shaped mountain. We will journey into the depths of the fjord system seeking the best opportunities to paddle and explore among the islands and close to Greenland’s icecap. Further to the south, we have opportunities to paddle the ice filled bays or trek across the tundra on the rarely visited Arve-prinsens Ejland and soak in the unique history of Oqaatsut with a visit to the famous H8 whalers tavern.

aboard Elsi: Your Home at Sea

Built in 1986 at the German Blumenthaler shipyard, the schooner Elsi began her working life as a training expedition vessel. After extensive renovations in 2013, Elsi embarked on medical humanitarian missions to remote corners of the world. In 2022, she began operating in the Polar regions. She is well fitted for polar travel with heating, satellite communication and comfortable living quarters. With her rich legacy and modern comforts, Elsi offers a cozy and safe haven making her the perfect vessel for our Greenland sailing and kayaking adventure.
