Disko Bay to Uummannaq – an intimate arctic adventure

Embark on an extraordinary journey through the breathtaking landscapes of West Greenland aboard the M/S Balto, a small expedition vessel designed for true exploration. With only 12 passengers, this voyage offers an immersive experience of Greenland’s dramatic fjords, calving glaciers, and towering icebergs.

Witness the midnight sun cast its golden glow over Disko Bay, feel the thunder of ice breaking from massive glaciers, and experience the Arctic’s rich wildlife, from whales gliding through icy waters to seabirds soaring above remote cliffs. This is an adventure of discovery, where each day unfolds new wonders in one of the world’s most untouched wilderness areas.

disko bay: Ice, Fjords & Ancient Legends

Navigate through the Disko Bay region, where geological marvels and deep fjords set the scene for an awe-inspiring expedition. As we sail across Vaigat Strait and beyond, we encounter icebergs of staggering size and beauty, sculpted by nature’s forces over centuries. Explore the volcanic cliffs of Disko Island, a land shaped by fire and ice, where Greenlandic legends speak of its magical origins. We visit Uummannaq Island, its striking heart-shaped mountain rising above the Arctic landscape, a place where myths tell of visitors leaving a piece of their heart behind. Each stop brings us closer to the rich history and traditions of Greenland, from ancient Inuit culture to the small, resilient settlements where people still live in harmony with this wild and powerful land.

encounters with arctic wildlife

Greenland’s waters are alive with marine life, offering unparalleled wildlife encounters. Keep watch for humpback, minke, and pilot whales, often spotted feeding near ice-capped shores. Witness the Arctic’s pristine beauty as we visit the village of Niaqornat, known as ‘the village at the end of the world,’ where traditional hunting culture endures. As we sail deeper into rarely visited fjords, we find ourselves in a world few have explored—where massive glaciers calve into the sea and towering cliffs echo with the cries of seabirds. Each moment brings the raw power of nature to the forefront, a constant reminder of the Arctic’s dynamic and ever-changing landscape.

Aboard the M/S Balto: Small Ship, Big Experience

Designed for true expedition travel, the M/S Balto is a 12-passenger vessel that offers a rare level of intimacy and flexibility in Arctic exploration. Unlike larger ships, we can access remote fjords, navigate between colossal icebergs, and make landings in seldom-visited places. The ship provides comfortable accommodations, delicious meals, and expert guides who bring Greenland’s landscapes and history to life. With a small group, each guest has a front-row seat to the Arctic’s grandeur—whether watching the shifting light on the ice, listening to the distant roar of calving glaciers, or stepping ashore to explore the untouched wilderness.
