EAST Greenland expedition cruise on M/S BALTO - Southern Sea Ventures

EAST greenland and the Spectacular Sermilik Fjord

SOUTHEAST GREENLAND – a small ship aDventure

Embark on an extraordinary journey through the breathtaking landscapes of East Greenland aboard the M/S Balto, a small expedition vessel designed for true exploration. With only 12 passengers, this voyage offers an immersive and intimate Arctic experience.

Our Arctic voyage begins in Iceland’s capital Rekjavik, from where we fly to Kulusuk on the southeast coast of Greenland to board M/S Balto. The next six days are spent in a nature lover’s nirvana, with breathtaking scenery of towering mountains, colossal icebergs, glaciers and pristine Arctic wilderness.

SermiLIK FJORD

The name ‘Sermilik’ means ‘place with glaciers’ in the Greenlandic language. The fjord stretches over 90 kilometres and cuts through a rugged landscape of towering glaciers and jagged peaks. There are three glaciers that feed the fjord: Helheim, Fenris and Midgard. Most of the myriad of icebergs, of all shapes and sizes, that we kayak and cruise among originate from the impressive Helheim glacier at the deep end of the fjord, which produces some of the largest icebergs in all of Greenland.

encounters with arctic wildlife

Despite the cold temperatures, Greenland possesses a great variety of wildlife, both in the surrounding waters and on the coastal lands away from the Greenland Ice Sheet. Around two million seals are believed to inhabit Greenland’s waters, including the ringed, harp and common seals. Many types of whale visit Greenland in the summer and autumn, with visitors of the beluga, blue, Greenland, fin, humpback, minke, pilot, sperm and right whale species. Greenland also supports a population of warm-blooded land mammals, such as the small Greenland Arctic hare, northern collared lemming, muskox and the Greenland Arctic fox. A large number of birds make their home on Greenlands’ coasts, many of which are water birds, including species of sea duck, cormorant, puffin, gull and sea eagle. However, some bird species are primarily terrestrial, including the small 15cm snow bunting, the widespread rock ptamigan, large snowy owl and white-plumed gyrfalcon.

Aboard the M/S Balto: Small Ship, Big Experience

Designed for true expedition travel, M/S Balto is a 12-passenger vessel that offers a rare level of intimacy and flexibility in Arctic exploration. Unlike larger ships, M/S Balto can access remote fjords, navigate between colossal icebergs and make landings in seldom-visited places. The ship provides comfortable cabins, delicious meals and expert guides who bring Greenland’s landscapes and history to life. With a small group, each guest has a front-row seat to the Arctic’s grandeur—whether watching the shifting light on the ice, listening to the distant roar of calving glaciers or stepping ashore to explore the untouched wilderness.
