Polar Pioneer: Mothership Sea Kayaking Holidays

Our trips to the Antarctic, High Arctic, Greenland and the Scottish Islands take place aboard the expedition cruise ship Polar Pioneer, home to our fleet of sturdy plastic kayaks. Built in Finland in 1985 as an ice-strengthened research ship, Polar Pioneer was refurbished in 2001 to accommodate 54 passengers. Her enthusiastic Russian captain and crew are among the world's most experienced ice navigators. Accommodation is simple yet comfortable and all cabins have outside portholes. The ship has simple, wholesome meals, a cosy bar and library. Onboard lectures by naturalists and historians unlock the mysteries of the areas we visit.

Around 10 passengers may select to kayak during these voyages and zodiac support is used if weather or current require it. You do not have to be an expert kayaker but you should have some paddling experience. Once or twice daily, we launch our kayaks to glide quietly amongst icebergs and icefloes for encounters with wildlife, to visit whaling industry remains, Inuit communities and scientific research stations, or to explore some of Scotland's wildest most remote coastlines.
