The Ring of Fire
15 day expedition ~ 14 day voyage ~ 8-10 days kayaking ~ Grade: Moderate +

From Hokkaido we journey northwards along the giant volcanic stepping-stones of the Kuril Islands to the vast wilderness of the Kamchatka Peninsula. Wild and remote, kayaking in this dramatic scenery is a privilege. Large seabird colonies, rich marine life, primeval spruce forest, spongy tundra, bamboo and birch forests, active smoking volcanoes and hot springs are treats that await us.
This is expedition cruising and adventure kayaking. We’ll visit world heritage sites, and traditional fishing villages. Numerous bays reveal sea otter and sea lion colonies and we hope to visit the home of the Kunashir brown bear. Imagine paddling in a spectacular caldera dwarfed by towering cliffs. Each day holds promise of marine mammal encounters whilst the air is alive with guillemots, kittiwakes, puffins, auklets and eagles. At Kamchatka we’ll move from coastal sea stacks to inland rivers and even trade our kayaks for a helicopter to access the beautiful volcanic mountains and lakes. Don’t miss out on this one!
