Kayak the World's Mightiest River
15-day voyage ~ 10-12 days kayaking ~
Grade: Moderate
Join
us for a kayaking tour along the length of the Mighty Amazon
River. Imagine kayaking beside a traditional Amazon dugout
canoe loaded with the morning's fish catch, or absorbing the
sites and sounds as we paddle silently between treetops in
flooded forest. The Amazon's mysteries unfold as we cruise
3,700 kilometres downstream on Polar
Pioneer. On this Amazon kayak adventure, we visit stilt
and floating houses of the caboclos (river people), and swim
in tannin-stained black-water rivers.
From our kayaks, we'll watch for pink freshwater
dolphins, screeching howler monkeys, sleepy three-toed sloths
and a bewildering variety of the Amazon's 1000 colourful bird
species. We plan to visit traditional Indian villages to watch
dancing and trade handicrafts, and Manaus where the famous
opera house was built during the brief "rubber boom" a century
ago.
TRIP SUSPENDED:
We ran our last Amazon voyage in April/May 2005 and
we're not sure whether we will return to this mighty river.
Meantime, our mothership is embarking on new Scottish Islands
adventures between our Antarctic and Arctic seasons.
